HomeWorld NewsParliamentary elections, thousands of dollars in fees set for candidates

Thousands of dollars in fees have been set for those contesting Zimbabwe’s parliamentary elections.

According to the Reuters news agency, Zimbabwe’s parliament has approved a $20,000 fee for running for representatives and top positions in the House.

Lawmakers have maintained plans to charge presidential candidates $20,000 and those running for parliament $1,000.

Parliament has set the fee despite opposition proposals to lower the fee ahead of next week’s deadline for candidates to register.

Dignitaries and supporters of Zimbabwe's President Emmerson Mnangagwa look on after he was sworn in during his presidential inauguration ceremony in Harare.

These fees, which are in US dollars, are 20 times more than the fees charged in the previous elections in 2018.

During the debate, ruling party MPs said the policy would ensure that only strong candidates run for office, a move that has been approved by parliament.
