On Friday, the Italian authorities said that a fire broke out at night in a home for the elderly in Milan, killing six people and injuring about 80, including three in critical condition. The fire broke out in a room on the first floor of the facility. It was quickly extinguished and did not spread to the rest of the building, yet it produced a large amount of toxic fumes. Speaking to reporters at the scene, Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala said two residents were burned to death in their room, while four others died of poisoning.
