HomeWorld NewsWho named the hurricane Bupper Joy?

Cyclone Biparjoy is moving towards the coasts of Pakistan and India and its direction is constantly changing, many people are confused about its name, what it means and how it was given the name.

Bipar Joy is the second cyclone to form in the Arabian Sea in 2023, the first being Cyclone Mocha which hit Bangladesh. After initially gathering strength over the Arabian Sea for the past several days, Bupper Joy finally turned into a cyclone on June 6, after which it was named.

The name of this cyclone has been suggested by Bangladesh which means disaster. Typhoons are named according to a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) convention that aims to distinguish between multiple typhoons that form at the same location.

Under this objective, 6 Regional Specialized Meteorological Centers and 5 Regional Tropical Storm Warning Centers have been empowered to name storms worldwide and issue advisories regarding them.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is responsible for naming the storms that form near the South and South-Eastern countries and is designated as the Regional Storm Meteorological Centre.

It includes 13 countries including India, Bangladesh, Iran, Myanmar, Maldives, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

In April 2020, the IMD compiled a list of 169 names for cyclones, with 13 proposed by each country. These names were then divided into 13 lists and it was ensured that each list had at least one name recommended by the countries mentioned above.

Then from these lists the names of the storms were gradually given and when the names of one list were exhausted, names were given from the other list. These names are arranged alphabetically in English. These names apply only to cyclones that form in the Indian Ocean and the South Pacific region.

With the arrival of Cyclone Biparjoy, the first list of names has been exhausted and this is the first name of the second list proposed by Bangladesh.

All list number one typhoons have already passed namely: Nasarga, Gati, Newar, Borevi, Tak Tai, Yas, Gulab, Shaheen, Jawad, Asani, Satrang, Mandos and Mocha.
