The turbulence occurred about 10 hours into the flight as it passed over the Irrawaddy Basin in Myanmar, causing the plane to drop 6,000 feet in about three minutes.
Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong expressed his condolences and assured support to affected passengers and their families, saying: “We are deeply sorry for the traumatic experience experienced by everyone on board SQ321.”
This incident is the first fatal incident involving Singapore Airlines in nearly 25 years. The airline, known for its strong safety record, last had a major accident in October 2000.
