As Elon Musk seeks stricter accountability for government agencies, federal employees across the United States are ordered to explain weekly work or risk termination.
An email sent by the Human Resources Administration (OPM) on Saturday instructed workers to submit a list of last week’s achievements copied to managers by Monday night.
The order coincides with President Donald Trump’s order, Musk said.
“A failure to respond is considered a resignation,” Musk wrote on X, the social media platform he owns.
The billionaires lead the efficiency of the government, which already oversees the firing of at least 20,000 federal employees.
The OPM described the move as part of the administration’s willingness to a more efficient government, but it remains unclear whether non-compliance could legally justify termination.
Labor experts suggest that disciplinary action such as responsibility and suspension can be more enforceable.
The Federation of US Government Employees (AFGE), which represents more than 800,000 civil servants, has condemned the order and warned it would challenge illegal dismissals.
“Once again, Elon Musk and the Trump administration have shown complete disdain for federal employees,” President Affe Everett Kelly said.
Federal agencies are dealing with it in confusion. Some departments cited security concerns and advised employees to wait for internal guidance before waiting for internal guidance.
Others, including the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), have confirmed the legitimacy of the directive.
Musk has previously implemented similar work tracking measures on Twitter, Now X and Tesla.
The latest orders show even more upheaval as the Trump administration continues to make a drastic overhaul of the federal workforce.
