Donald Trump’s documents hearing postponed indefinitely, judge orders – vopbuzz

NEW DELHI: Former US President Donald Trump’s trial in Florida, where he was accused of illegally keeping secret documents after the end of his presidency, has been postponed indefinitely by the US District Judge Aileen Cannon Tuesday.
Trump’s trial at the beginning documents caseThe trial, brought by Special Prosecutor Jack Smith, was scheduled to begin May 20. However, both the prosecution and the defense agreed that this date should be postponed. Judge Cannon, who was appointed to the bench by Trump in 2020, confirmed that the trial would not be held. It will start on May 20, but did not specify a new date. Instead, he planned for pre-trial hearings to continue until July 22.
Trump claimed 40 people were innocent federal counts, accusing him of “keeping sensitive national security documents at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Florida after leaving office in 2021 and thwarting U.S. government efforts to retrieve them.” Trump faces significant challenges as the Republican nominee challenges Democratic President Joe Biden, who defeated him in the previous election.
Smith faces significant hurdles in getting federal cases against Trump to trial before the election. Cannon has not yet ruled on some critical legal issues in the documents case and has stated that he supports Trump’s defense on some issues. Trump’s lawyers advocated for a trial date after the election but also suggested Aug. 12 in response to Cannon’s order to propose a timeline. Smith, however, suggested a start date in July.
Randall Eliason, a law professor at George Washington University and an expert on white-collar criminal cases, commented on the unprecedented situation, saying: “We’re in this absolutely unprecedented situation where a defendant will potentially have the power to shut down. This is a reason for the case to go to trial before the election.” argument.”
In addition to the federal lawsuits, Trump has been on trial in New York state court since April 15, accused of trying to illegally conceal hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. He was also indicted in Georgia state court for his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.
