New Delhi: The advisory committee of the Ministry of Petroleum of India has demanded the government to phase out diesel vehicles by 2027 while emphasizing the use of electric vehicles.

The Advisory Committee’s report has recommended banning the registration of diesel vehicles from 2024.

According to an Indian media report, an advisory committee of the Ministry of Petroleum has recommended to the government that by 2027, India should ban the use of diesel-powered four-wheelers in cities with a population of more than 1 million and use electricity and gas. Self-propelled vehicles should be promoted.

The report said that until all vehicles are electrified, emphasis should be placed on the use of CNG vehicles. With this initiative, India will be able to reduce its carbon emissions to zero by 2070.

The committee believes that registration of electric trucks should be allowed for the supply of goods from 2024. The report recommends greater use of railways and gas-powered trucks for transporting goods.

The report of the committee headed by former Petroleum Secretary Tarun Kapur has said that the use of non-electric city buses should be phased out by 2030 and diesel buses should not be included in city transport from 2024.

The committee further said that such motorcycles, scooters and three-wheelers should also be removed which spread more pollution.
