Washington: Chinese hackers stole 60,000 emails by attacking the computer system of the US State Department.

According to the World News Agency, a member of the US Senate staff admitted in a conversation with Reuters that hackers from China had gained access to the Microsoft e-mail platform of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

A staffer working for US Senator Eric Schmidt spoke on condition of anonymity about details of IT officials’ briefings to lawmakers about the email theft.

US Senate IT officials told lawmakers that Chinese hackers stole more than 60,000 emails from 10 different State Department email accounts, according to a staff member.

US IT officials did not disclose the names and positions of the individuals whose emails were hacked at the briefing, but all but one were stationed in East Asia and the Pacific.

China has rejected the US State Department’s accusation of hacking emails, citing Microsoft’s incompetence as the real reason.
