At least 41 people were trapped after an avalanche carried them in the Indian Himalayas.

Follow Sky Newsthe incident occurred near a highway in the Chamori area of Uttarakhand, where workers were involved in the construction of the road.

Local police reported that at least 57 workers were initially trapped under the snow due to an avalanche.

Reports say 16 people have been rescued so far, and five of those rescued have been in crisis and taken to military facilities for treatment.

Senior police officer Rajeev Swaloop said that around 150 soldiers are participating in rescue operations along with national and state disaster response forces.

In the meantime, Chamori district magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said “rescue operations are slow as active rains are currently making it difficult to move.”

He added, “As soon as the weather improves, we will quickly track rescue operations.”

No casualties have been reported so far, according to local governments.

Previously, local media misrepresented the incident as a “glacial burst,” but authorities later confirmed it was an avalanche.
