At least 15 people have died and 19 are missing after a boat capsized off the coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia.
According to the French news agency AFP, the local office of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency said in a statement on Monday that the boat sank after midnight on Sunday with 40 people on board.
According to the statement, six passengers have been rescued and shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment while investigations are underway to determine the cause of the boat capsizing.
“The search for 19 people is ongoing, for which two teams have been formed,” Mohammad Arfa, head of the rescue agency in Kendari, southeast Sulawesi, said in a statement.
Marine accidents are nothing new in the Southeast archipelago comprising 17,000 islands. In 2018, more than 150 people died after a boat capsized in one of the world’s deepest lakes on the island of Sumatra.
In May last year, a ferry carrying more than 800 people capsized in deep waters off East Nusa Tenggara province and was stranded for two days, but no one was injured.
