In the Indian state of Manipur, the house of the main suspect involved in the rape and stripping of women on the street has been set on fire.
Hemant Pandey, a senior officer of the Manipur police, told the British news agency Reuters that “local women first pelted stones at the main accused’s house and then set fire to parts of it.”
In Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, which has been going on for almost two months, a village belonging to the Kukizumi community was attacked on May 4, where armed men stripped women on the streets and killed one person.
According to the police, they have arrested four people involved in this attack and the court has sent these accused to 11 days physical remand.
Police officer Hemant Pandey said after the burning of the main accused’s house, “We request the women to protest peacefully as the situation is already bad.” We can understand their anger.’
It should be noted that 125 people have died in the ethnic riots going on in Manipur for the last two and a half months, while the number of people who have left the area due to violent incidents has exceeded 40 thousand.
A video of two women being stripped went viral on social media on Wednesday, after which people in every city in India are expressing outrage.
Hundreds of people took part in a protest in Bangalore where some held banners that read ‘A woman’s body is not a battlefield.’
“We want to know why the police took so long to act when they found out that women were being raped and made to walk around naked,” Radhika Burman, a female student who participated in the protest in Calcutta, told Reuters.
