After a video of women being stripped naked on the streets of the Indian state of Manipur went viral on social media and four accused involved in the incident were arrested, the husband of a woman who was raped has said, “I never dreamed it would happen.”

In Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, which has been going on for almost two months, a village belonging to the Kukizumi community was attacked on May 4, where armed men stripped women on the streets and killed one person.

In a telephonic interview to India TV, one woman’s husband recounted the incident, saying that the way the gunmen treated his wife and other women was ‘not even animals’.

He further said that ‘They took two, three women separately and took off her clothes, which is my wife, and also took off the clothes of a girl, and when her father came to save the girl, they killed her.’

The woman’s husband says that he has retired from the Indian Army and has also served on the borders.

‘I am a former army chief. I was also in the Indian Peacekeeping Force in Sri Lanka. Even in Kargil I protected my country but now after retirement I am not able to protect my home, my wife and my villagers.’

On the other hand, the four persons involved in this attack have been sent to police custody on 11-day physical remand by the court.

How did this event happen?

According to NDTV, the women who were raped belong to the Kukizumi community.

An India Today report said that according to the case filed with the police, around 800 to 1,000 people attacked a village belonging to the Kukizumi community, ransacking and setting houses on fire.

During this attack, three women and two men belonging to the Kuki Zumi community went to the forest to save their lives and were taken into custody by a police team, but the armed men abducted them from the police custody.

The gunmen killed one man instantly while forcing the women to strip. According to the FIR, the attackers also gang-raped a 19-year-old girl.
