Hundreds of angry protesters have set fire to the Swedish embassy in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq.

According to the news agency Reuters, a protest was held outside the Swedish embassy in Iraq against another expected incident of burning the Holy Quran.

During the early morning demonstration on Thursday, hundreds of angry people entered the Swedish embassy and set the building on fire.

Immediately after the incident, the Swedish Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack in a statement.

According to the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Stockholm, “We condemn all kinds of attacks on diplomats and staff of international organizations.”

The Swedish embassy in Baghdad declined to immediately respond to any questions on the matter.

The protest was announced on Thursday by Shia religious leader Muqtada al-Sadr.

According to announcements posted on the social networking website Telegram and pro-Muqtada al-Sadr media, supporters of Muqtada al-Sadr turned to the Swedish embassy in Baghdad to protest.

Earlier in the media, there were reports that the police in Stockholm had given permission for another Koran-burning demonstration outside the Iraqi embassy.

Various videos of the attack on the Swedish Embassy are being shared in a Telegram group called ‘One Baghdad’.

In a video, it can be seen that a crowd is gathering outside the Swedish embassy in Baghdad around 1 o’clock last night. An hour later, angry people shouting slogans in support of Muqtada al-Sadr attacked the embassy.

Videos showed dozens of people climbing the wall of the embassy complex. After that, an attempt was made to break the front door.

In another video, a place was being set on fire. Other footage showed dozens of protesters standing shirtless in an embassy room in the heat, with alarms sounding in the background.

Some more videos show protesters performing Fajr prayers outside the embassy after the incident.

Iraq’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement condemning the attack.

“The Iraqi government has directed the competent security authorities to immediately take necessary security measures and investigations to determine the elements behind the incident and to identify the perpetrators of this act and hold them accountable according to the law,” the foreign ministry said.

Iraqi police and state media did not immediately confirm the attack and burning of the Swedish embassy.

It should be noted that a man planned to burn copies of the Koran and the Torah, the Jewish holy book, outside the Israeli embassy in Stockholm under police protection. However, the man reportedly abandoned his plan due to fears of widespread outrage.

In Sweden, the right to public demonstration is protected under the constitution. Blasphemy laws were abolished in Sweden in the 1970s.
