An investigation into the sinking of a migrant boat off the coast of Greece has revealed that the possible cause of the accident may have been the error of the Greek Coast Guard when it tried to secure the boat with a rope.
According to Arab News, a joint investigation into the June 14 incident has revealed new evidence that the Greek Coast Guard has given conflicting accounts of the accident.
British newspaper The Guardian, German broadcaster ARD, Greek media agency Solomon and Berlin-based investigative agency Forensus have jointly investigated the incident, which says that the coastguard, contrary to claims, tied the boat with a rope.
The investigation also revealed that a coast guard rescue boat was in port near Tarkin’s boat but did not arrive at the scene of the accident, while the EU border and coast guard agency Franticus offered help three times, but Greece did not. The authorities did not respond.
It should be noted that there were about 700 migrants on board the boat from Libya to Italy which overturned in the sea near Greece. 500 of the passengers on the boat are still missing.
The investigation also examined Greek coast guard logs, survivor testimony, flight and maritime data, satellite images and eyewitness videos.
The statement of the Coast Guard and the survivors also contradicted the sudden movement of the boat towards the west.
The coast guard said in its statement that the boat had changed course on its own, but investigations showed that the Greek rescue boat had approached the migrant boat when it had changed course, suggesting that the boat had The rope was tied.

Several passengers also said in their statements that the Coast Guard had told the tourists that the boat was traveling west.
According to the statement of the passengers on the lower deck of the boat, even after the boat stood motionless in the sea for an hour, an attempt was made to tie it with a rope a second time.
Passengers said the boat was moving forward despite the engine being switched off, indicating that an attempt was being made to tie it with a rope.
One passenger said it appeared as if an attempt was being made to remove the migrants from Greek waters so that the Greek authorities would not be held responsible.
Maria Papamina, a lawyer for the Greek Council for Refugees, said the coast guard twice tried to secure the boat with a rope.
