In the Netherlands, the government has collapsed after failing to agree a deal to limit immigration, leading to new elections soon.
According to the Reuters news agency, Prime Minister Mark Ruta’s Conservative Party tried to discourage people from coming to the country to seek asylum, but their two coalition parties refused to support it.
Prime Minister Mark Ruta said in a news conference that it is no secret that the parties in the government coalition have different views on immigration policy. Today we unfortunately have to conclude that these differences can no longer be reduced. Therefore, I will submit the resignation of the entire cabinet to the king.’
Divisions between the coalition parties in Mark Ruta’s government deepened this week when they tabled a proposal to limit the entry of war-torn refugee children into their country.
Under the proposal, children of refugees in the Netherlands would also have to wait two years to be reunited with them, legislated.
On this proposal, the Christian Union and Liberal D parties in Mark Ruta’s government coalition 66 reacted strongly and the government fell into crisis.
After the resignation, Mark Ruta’s government will continue to act as a caretaker government until a new government is formed in the next general election.
