A man tore up a Koran and set it on fire outside Stockholm’s main mosque on Wednesday after Swedish police gave him permission to protest.

According to the British news agency Reuters, the police later registered a case against the man for incitement against an ethnic or national group.

The incident of burning the Quran took place at a time when the three-day Muslim holiday of Eid-ul-Adha has started from Wednesday.

The incident risks provoking Turkey as Sweden seeks to join NATO.

A series of protests against Islam and for Kurdish rights in Sweden has angered Ankara. While Sweden needs Turkey’s support to join NATO.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan condemned the act in a tweet, saying that ‘allowing anti-Islamic demonstrations in the name of freedom of expression is unacceptable.’

According to Reuters, about 200 people at the scene watched as one of the protest organizers tore pages from a copy of the Koran and later set it on fire.

Some of the people present protested against the burning of Quran and raised slogans of Allahu Akbar. The police also arrested a person for trying to pelt stones.

Earlier, Swedish police said they had approved a protest whose organizer plans to set fire to a Koran outside Stockholm’s central mosque on Wednesday.

According to the French news agency AFP, the Swedish police said in a written decision that the security risks associated with burning the (Quran) nazr were “not of a nature that could justify a decision to reject the request under existing laws.” ‘

The approval of the protest came two weeks after a Swedish appeals court overturned a police decision to deny permits for two Koran-burning demonstrations in Stockholm.

Police cited security concerns at the time because the burning of a Muslim holy book outside the Turkish embassy in January led to weeks of protests, and calls for a boycott of Swedish products and its Progress towards NATO membership was halted.
