US President Joe Biden has said on the occasion of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington that religious freedom is a ‘fundamental principle’ of India-US relations.

Welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House on Thursday, President Joe Biden said, ‘Equality before the law, freedom of expression, religious community and mingling are principles that have always existed. And they have changed little and they have faced challenges in the history of our nations.’

It should be noted that the Indian Prime Minister and his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party, have been heavily criticized by several human rights groups, who claim that their government has remained a silent spectator to the persecution of the Muslim and Christian communities in the country. .

Even so, the meeting between the US president and the Indian prime minister is looking for positives and will discuss trade and defense issues as the two democracies face a rising China.

President Joe Biden further said that ‘I have long believed that the relationship between the United States and India is one of the most important relationships of the 21st century.’

On this occasion, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the societies of India and the United States are based on “democratic values.”

“Both countries are proud of their diversity and we both believe that our primary goal is to work for the common good and the well-being of all,” he added.
