9 people have been killed and 10 injured during the clashes in the north-eastern state of Manipur, India.
According to the Indian newspaper Hindustan Times, on Tuesday night, a few armed attackers entered a village on the border of Imphal East and Kangpuki districts in the ethnic riot-prone state of Manipur, after which clashes broke out.
Police say that the clashes started when the security forces arrived at the scene to stop the attackers.
It should be noted that since the ethnic riots that broke out in Manipur on May 3, 115 people have died while 40 thousand have been forced to leave their homes.
Violent incidents erupted in Manipur when local tribal groups protested against the court’s decision to grant tribal status to the Meti community. However, the protest soon got out of control and mobs started attacking houses, vehicles and places of worship.
Imphal East Superintendent of Police Sivakanta Singh said that on Tuesday night between 10:30 and 10:30 there was firing in the village in which 9 people were killed and 10 injured.
He said that the injured were taken to the hospital, one of whom is said to be in a critical condition.
According to the police, the security of the area is the responsibility of the Assam Rifles, but the situation has been brought under control.
During the ethnic riots, the authorities had to deploy the army in the area and impose a curfew to control the situation.
The majority of the Meti tribe living in the vicinity of Amphal are Hindus, while the majority of Koki are Christians who live in the vicinity of the mountains.
On June 1, Home Minister Amit Shah had also announced the formation of a committee to reduce tension in the region.
Amit Shah had asked those involved in the ethnic conflict to surrender and asked for strict action against those who did not comply.
