Former US President Donald Trump has said he has been indicted for mishandling classified documents at his Florida estate.
According to the Associated Press news agency, the US Department of Justice did not immediately confirm the indictment.
Donald Trump plans to run for the presidency once again but has been caught up in several lawsuits and the new lawsuit could expose him to many legal complications in this regard.
Two people familiar with the matter, who were not authorized to speak publicly, said Trump’s team had been informed that the former president had been indicted on seven counts, according to The Associated Press.
Donald Trump’s lawyers informed shortly before the announcement regarding the indictment of his social media platform ‘Truth Social’.
PBS NewsHour confirmed the indictment and said Trump has been ordered to appear in U.S. District Court in Miami on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
“This is certainly a very dark day for America,” Trump said. We are in rapid decline as a country, but together we will make America great again.’
Immediately after Trump announced his indictment and appearance in court on Tuesday, he resumed fundraising for the next presidential election.
The case has heightened legal risks for Trump. Trump has already been indicted in New York and faces investigations in Washington and Atlanta that could lead to criminal charges.
Prosecutors have said the former president’s claim that he enjoys immunity as a former supreme commander is false.
