Cape Town: Two Greater Crested Grebes surprised a photographer by performing a rare courtship dance.
According to media reports, 28-year-old photographer Peter Martin, who is a nature lover, was taking pictures in the Wilderness National Park near Lake Langley in South Africa.
Meanwhile, two grebes approached, Martin said. It was a rare sight to see them so closely and I couldn’t resist capturing their beauty on camera. But then something ‘magical’ happened.
In a mesmerizing sequence of events, the grebes suddenly engaged in a graceful dance, he said. They raised their wings, raised their heads and synchronized their head movements in perfect harmony. The birds swam rapidly towards each other, creating an unforgettable scene.
The climax of the dance, the photographer says, was when the two birds offered each other parts of the plant, which they rubbed on their undersides as they gracefully danced across the surface of the water. It felt like a magical moment, and capturing it on camera was a huge bonus I got,” recalls Peter.
