Tokyo: Japan is the only country in the world that has more people aged 80 and over than any other country in the world.

According to the World News Agency, Japan’s official statistics show that 12.5 million people are aged 80 or older, while more than 20 million people are aged 75 or older.

In Japan, with a total population of 12.44 million, the proportion of people over 65 years of age is 29.1%. Thus, Japan ranks first in the world in terms of the proportion of the total population aged 65 and over.

In this race of countries with an aging population, Italy is second and Finland is third.

Japan also ranks first in terms of elderly labor force with 9 million elderly people working. This figure constitutes 13.6 percent of Japan’s total workforce.

Which means that one out of every 7 employed persons is ‘aged’.

One of the reasons why Japan’s youth population is lower than in other countries and the elderly population is increasing is late marriage and childlessness.
