Naples: A tomb has been discovered in Naples, Italy that is nearly 2,000 years old and dates back to the ancient Roman period.

According to media reports, a tomb was recently discovered inside the cultivated land during an update to the city’s water supply system. Preliminary investigations estimate that the tomb is about 2,000 years old.

The entrance to the tomb was sealed with a tuff slab. Upon entering, exquisite art was revealed as decoration on the walls of the tomb. Among these arts is a notable representation of the three-headed dog, Cerberus, which is why the tomb is called the ‘Tomb of Cerberus’.

Cerberus, also known in theology as the “Hound of Hades”, guarded the gates of the underworld to prevent the souls of the dead from escaping.

The tomb also contains depictions of mythological scenes, including ichthyocentaurs, creatures with the upper body of a human, the forelegs of a horse, and the tail of a fish.

A full excavation of the chamber tomb is currently underway and archaeologists plan to explore the associated archeology surrounding the tomb.
