On July 4, 1826 – the 50th anniversary of independence – John Adams, aged 90, and Thomas Jefferson, aged 83, took their last breaths. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson played a major role in America’s independence. Coincidentally, five years later, the 5th President of the United States, James Monroe, also died on July 4.
