What is Product ID in WooCommerce?

WooCommerce stores all your product data in the WordPress database system.

To make each record unique, each product you add to your WooCommerce store is automatically assigned an ID number.

This allows WooCommerce to display a product on demand, process orders, and do a lot of cool things behind the scenes.

However, sometimes you may need to determine a product’s ID in order to perform certain tasks.

For example, you may be creating a WooCommerce product page and need a product ID to display a specific product.

Likewise, you can use a WooCommerce plugin that requires product IDs to display related products or offer upsells.

Let’s look at how to quickly find a WooCommerce product’s ID.

How to find a product ID in WooCommerce

WooCommerce makes it very easy to find a product ID.

Just go to the Products » All Products page. You will see a list of the latest products added to your WooCommerce store.

Hover over a product title. A command line appears below the product title. This line also contains the product ID, shown as ID: followed by the ID number.

The product ID is displayed under the product title on the All Products page

For example, in the screenshot above, the demo product ID is 81.

If your store only offers a handful of products, you can scroll down the product page to find a product and view its ID.

You can also use the search in the top right corner of the products table to quickly search for a product by name.

This allows you to narrow down the list of products displayed.

You can then search for a specific product and hover over the title to see the product ID.

You can also find a Product ID by clicking the Edit link.

This will now open the Edit Product page. If you look in your browser’s address bar, you will find the product ID in the URL.

Finding the product ID for a variation product in WooCommerce

If there are no variations for the product you’re looking for, you can use the method above to find a product ID.

However, if the product you are looking for has variations, each variation is assigned a unique product ID.

For example, if you sell a t-shirt in three colors like red, blue, and green, add different colors as a product variant.

Example of a WooCommerce product with variations

If you only need a product ID for a specific variant, you can find it here.

Just search for the product by visiting the Products » All products book page. Then click the Edit Product link under the product title.

On the product edit screen, scroll down to the “Product Details” section.

Click here on variations. All product variations are then displayed with their IDs.

What is the difference between product SKU and ID?

SKU stands for Stock Keeping Unit. This is a unique identifier that a store owner assigns to a product to keep track of their stock or inventory.

Retailers, wholesalers, and other store owners also use SKUs in product barcodes.

However, unlike product IDs, SKU identifiers are not automatically generated by WooCommerce. A store owner needs to add it to WooCommerce products manually.

Add SKU in WooCommerce

If you don’t track inventory in WooCommerce, your products may not have or need SKUs.

For example, if you sell digital downloads or virtual products, you may not need to keep track of your stock or inventory.

On the other hand, every product in your online store has a unique product ID that is automatically generated by WooCommerce. Even if you never enter an SKU, every product in your store has a product ID.
