London: According to a report presented by the scientists, due to the extinction of several plants, there are risks of extinction of about half of the medicines in the future.

It is estimated that half of the flowering plants on earth (about 1 lakh) are threatened with extinction.

Most medicines are based on compounds derived from plants. Scientists estimate that 45 percent of flowering plants are at risk of extinction, which means that humans are going to lose a large part of their source of medicine in the future.

In a report presented by the Royal Botanic Garden Kew, scientists have warned that even undiscovered plants are at risk of extinction. It is estimated that three out of four undiscovered plants are endangered.

This estimate is based on the discovery of 2,500 new plants each year, and an average of three-quarters of them are considered to be in immediate danger of extinction, suggesting that future discoveries are equally likely. There is danger.

Analyst Dr. Matilda Brown said researchers are looking at more than 100,000 plant species that are at risk of extinction. This number is more than the total number of mammals, birds, reptiles, fishes and all types of vertebrates.

He added that when it is seen that nine out of 10 medicines come from plants, we are going to lose half of our medicines in view of such a situation.

Fungiologists estimate that there are about 2.5 million species of fungi in the world, of which 155,000 are considered to be endangered.
