Madrid: A new study has found that biodegradable plastic bags are more toxic than conventional plastic bags.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Spanish National Research Council, examined three types of bags: compostable bags made from vegetable starch, reusable bags, and traditional bags. were included.

The scientists exposed these sacs to sunlight to dissolve them and then exposed them to fish cells. These bags were dissolved and the ingredients exposed were tested for toxicity.

According to the researchers, the biodegradable bags were found to contain large amounts of toxins that damaged fish cells.

Sintaport, lead author of the study published in the Journal of Hazardous Materials, said no toxicity was detected in cells placed in conventional plastic bags. However, the biodegradable bags were found to contain toxins that reduced cell viability.

He said that scientists believe that bag manufacturers add some chemicals to make biodegradable bags that can be toxic.

Moreover, reusable bags also showed higher levels of toxins than conventional bags. Chemicals will be added to these bags to make them reusable.
