NASA’s Curiosity rover recently captured stunning images of the Martian skies and landscape that give researchers a glimpse of what Mars looks like at different times of the day.

The Curiosity rover has been on Mars since 2012. It took the photos with black-and-white navigation cameras on April 8, according to a NASA press release, taking photos at dawn and dusk.

The photographs were then converted into panoramic images with color, which NASA described as a postcard, emphasizing the difference between the two images taken.

The postcard shows several landmarks on Mars, including the “Marker Bend Valley”, where Curiosity once found evidence that the site had a lake and two hills called Bolivar and Deepdale.

As the photo was taken on a clear day, Curiosity’s image also shows a mountain 54 miles from the rim of the crater.

The image also shows the SUV-sized Curiosity itself and captures the rover’s tracks across the dusty Martian landscape.

Even more impressive than the landscape photography is that it teaches researchers how the sun and shadows move on Mars.

“Anyone who’s been to a national park knows that the landscape looks different in the morning than it does in the afternoon,” said Doug Ellison, a Curiosity engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Images without added color remain striking: each of the black-and-white images shows the same scene, but with dark shadows everywhere. In the morning photos, the shadows are on the left.

NASA also said that it was winter when the rover took these photos. During this time of year on Mars, the shadows are darker and darker as dust levels in the Martian atmosphere are at their lowest.

“Shadows on Mars get sharper and darker when there’s less dust and softer when there’s a lot of dust,” Ellison said.
