TOKYO: Japan’s military is testing Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service to adopt the technology next fiscal year, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Sunday, citing unnamed government sources.

Yomiuri said the Defense Ministry already has access to communications satellites in geostationary orbit, but Musk’s use of Starlink technology powered by SpaceX would add a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit.

Countries around the world are trying to build resilience against the threat of attacks on communications or satellites in the event of conflict.

Japan’s Self-Defense Forces have been testing StarLink since March, and the system has been deployed in about 10 locations and in training, the newspaper said.

A Defense Ministry spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment on the report outside business hours.

Starlink technology is being deployed on the battlefield by Ukraine, and Russia is trying to block its use in the region. Musk said in October that SpaceX could not afford to fund Starlink’s use in Ukraine indefinitely.
