Chinese smartphone maker Honor will spend $10 billion on AI development over the next five years as the previous Huawei units prepare for public listings, CEO James Li said on Sunday.
The deep Shenzhen-based company aims to expand from being a smartphone company primarily to develop AI-powered PCs, tablets and wearable systems, Li said in a speech at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade show in Barcelona.
In December, Honor said it had completed a shareholder restructuring, although no timeline was announced.
Honor’s announcement comes amid the boom in AI investment in China, spurred by interest in Startup Deepseek’s low-cost, large-scale language models. From local governments to home appliance manufacturers, stakeholders are rushing to integrate Deepseek’s technology and do more AI research.

In August, Reuters reported that Honor received high levels of support from deep Shenzhen local governments in terms of research and development funding, tax credits and assistance with expansion overseas.
