Shubman Gill has moved closer to current top-ranked ODI batsman Babar Azam as the Indian opener continued his stellar batting form in the ongoing ODI series against Australia.

Gill played a stormy inning of 74 runs on 63 balls in the first ODI against Australia on Friday and played a brilliant inning of 104 runs on 97 balls in the second ODI on Sunday.

After the latest ICC rankings update, Gill is at the second position with 847 points, while Babar Azam remains at the number one position with 857 points.

The Indian opener also showcased his batting ability in the 2023 Asia Cup, where he emerged as the leading run-scorer in the tournament. He scored an impressive 302 runs in six innings at an average of 75.50.

In the year 2023, Gill has performed tremendously in the ODI format and tops the batting charts with a total of 1221 runs in 20 innings. In comparison, the Pakistan captain has scored 745 runs in 15 innings in the same year. This remarkable consistency and his recent excellent performances have established Gill as a strong contender for the coveted number one spot in the ODI batting rankings.
