Pakistani cricket legend Wasim Akram has expressed strong criticism of the national team’s selection committee and is hoping for a more structured, merit-based approach when selecting players.

In the discussion of Pakistan’s early exit from ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Akram highlighted the team’s repeated failures in major tournaments and the need for selectors with first-hand experience at the highest level.

“Pakistan is struggling with early exits in the fourth consecutive ICC tournament. The same players are being chosen, the same mistakes are repeated. Accountability is needed,” Akram says.

The former captain proposed that Pakistan employs a similar system to India. The Indian cricket experience is a prerequisite for selection committee members.

He questioned the existence of bureaucrats in the role of important decision-making, arguing that only individuals with considerable performance experience should be entrusted with the obligation to choose.

Akram also criticised the lack of long-term planning and calls for greater transparency from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). He suggested that the PCB president outlines plans for the future and holds regular press conferences to address public concerns.

“We need clarity. The Chairman should communicate with the country about where we are heading and how we are planning to revise our national structure,” he added.

Pakistan’s campaign at the Champions Trophy 2025 ended without a single victory and placed it at the bottom of the group alongside Bangladesh. Akram’s comments reflect growing dissatisfaction within the cricket community over declining team performance on the global stage.
