Britain’s King Charles III has said after taking the throne on Saturday that he is well aware of the “duties and heavy responsibilities” of the position.
Britain’s new monarch has been officially announced in an ancient tradition and political symbol broadcast live for the first time in history.
Charles formally became king after Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday, but Saturday’s ceremony is an important constitutional and ceremonial step to introduce the new monarch to the country.
The ceremony at St James’s Palace, the royal residence in London, was attended by the Council of Accession, made up of senior politicians and officials who advise the monarch.
The council formally gave him the title ‘King Charles III’ on this occasion.
After that, the oath and announcements of the king will continue. This is the first time the event has been held since 1952 when Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne.
According to the French news agency AFP, the announcement by the council said: “Prince Charles Philip Arthur George has now become our King Charles III after the death of our Queen, whose happy memories are with us.” May God protect the king.
Charles was joined at the event by his wife Camilla, who is now Queen Consort, and his eldest son, Prince William.
William is now heir to the throne and crown prince, bearing his father’s title of Prince of Wales.
According to the American news agency AP, after the ceremony, a royal official will make a loud announcement from the balcony of St. James’s Palace.
The process will also be carried out in the medieval city of London and other locations across the UK.
Two days after the death of the 96-year-old queen, who spent an unprecedented 70 years on the throne in Scotland’s Balmoral Castle, thousands of people are still gathering outside Buckingham Palace in London to pay their respects.
The scenes are being seen outside other royal palaces across the UK and outside British embassies around the world.
King Charles will be crowned on Friday, after which he will pledge lifelong service to the Queen in a speech.
