Apple acknowledged the flaw in a support document explaining how to restore the phone and instead start from scratch, where they can start transferring from an iCloud backup.

The company is now operational iOS 17.0.2says this fixes the bug and allows data to be transferred from the previous model. The key here is to install this update BEFORE you start transferring data.

Apple promises new iPhone 15 owners should now be asked to update to iOS 17.0.2 before being asked to set up their new phone with an old phone.

The update’s release notes state that it “resolves an issue that could prevent data from being transferred directly from another iPhone during setup,” along with some other bug fixes and security updates.

If you dismissed this notification or were not prompted, there is an issue that you need to resolve to complete the installation. Apple will ask you to restore your iPhone with a computer.

The support document explains the process below.

Restore your new iPhone with a computer
1) Connect your new iPhone to the computer with a cable.
2) Press and quickly release the volume up button. Press and quickly release the volume down button. Then press and hold the side button.
Continue holding until the Apple logo appears and do not release until an image of a computer and cable appears.
3) On your computer, find your new iPhone in Finder or iTunes.
4) When you see the Restore or Update option, select Restore.
5) If your iPhone restarts while your computer is downloading the iPhone software, wait for the download to complete and then put your iPhone into recovery mode again.
