The visitors, set a target of 281 to win, started the rain-curtailed day at 107 for three, but their chances looked bleak when they were reduced to 227-8.

But Pat Cummins bounced back in partnership with Nathan Lyon and scored an unbeaten 44 to seal the victory.

In a tense chase, he hit the final boundary to take his side over the line for a 1-0 lead in the series.

After a rain-delayed start, Australia’s unstoppable opener Usman Khawaja powered his side to victory with a gritty innings to guide his side towards the target.

They reached 183–5 at the tea interval – needing 98 more, but a pace-filled match turned England’s way when Khawaja was bowled for 65 by England captain Ben Stokes.

England were on the verge of victory when Joe Root caught and bowled Alex Carey.

But Pat Cummins began the comeback with big sixes off the off-spin of Joe Root as England delayed taking the new ball and was the quietest man in the stadium as they sealed victory.

It was the second highest successful chase at Edgbaston and made up for Australia’s heartbreaking defeat by England at the same ground in 2005 when they fell three short of chasing 282.
