New research has shown that one sleepless night can weaken the immune system of healthy young individuals.
According to Medical Xpress, a study published in the Journal of Immunology found that 24-hour sleep deprivation changes how a person’s immune system works and behaves like an obese person.
In this study, researchers at the Dasman Diabetes Institute in Kuwait, Kuwait analyzed sleep patterns in 237 healthy adult participants with various BMIs.
The lead investigator at research Hatema al-Rashed said: Advances in technology, long-term screen times, and social norms become increasingly destructive to normal sleep duration. ”
She explained, “This sleep disruption has had a major impact on immune health and overall well-being.”
The researchers noted that obese individuals had significantly lower sleep quality and had higher chronic low-grade inflammation compared to the lean group.
Nonclassical monocytes were also significantly increased in obese participants, correlated with reduced sleep quality and increased proinflammatory markers.
