HomeGulf NewsIraqis beat the summer heat by swimming in the shrinking Tigris River

BAGHDAD: With scorching temperatures and power outages, Wissam Abed cools off from the harsh Baghdad summer by swimming in the Tigris River, but as Iraqi rivers dry up, so does an old hobby. Near a bridge connecting the east of the city with the west, Abed stood in the middle of the river, but the water only reached his waist. I live here in Adhamiya, as did my grandfather before me. “Year after year, the water situation is getting worse,” said the 37-year-old, referring to his neighborhood along the Tigris River in northern Baghdad.
