Thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Tel Aviv against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans to reform the country’s judiciary, and protest leaders say more “days of trouble” are ahead.
According to the US news agency Associated Press, the Netanyahu government gave preliminary approval to a key part of the reform of the judiciary earlier this week, but the bill needs two more votes before it becomes law.
Last night’s protest has become an important part of the grassroots movement and was the largest protest of the week.
On Tuesday, protesters blocked major highways and disrupted operations at the country’s main international airport as Netanyahu’s parliamentary coalition introduced a bill to overhaul the judicial system.
After more than six months of protests, the movement shows little sign of abating.
Israel’s national labor union and its medical association have joined a long list of groups speaking out against the bill.
Army reservists, fighter pilots and business leaders have urged the government to block the plan.
People belonging to different sectors from all over the country have joined the protest in Tel Aviv last Saturday. Demonstrators lit torches outside Netanyahu’s home in Jerusalem and demonstrated in the coastal cities of Herzliya and Netanya.

The Israeli Prime Minister was admitted to the hospital on Saturday due to a sudden physical disorder. He spent the previous day in the sun without drinking water, after which he became dehydrated.
Benjamin Netanyahu later released a video statement from a Tel Aviv hospital saying he was feeling better.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Netanyahu had to spend the night in hospital and the weekly cabinet meeting scheduled for Sunday was postponed until Monday.
