Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas visited the Palestinian refugee camp in Jenin, occupied West Bank, on Wednesday.
According to the American news agency Associated Press, this was the first visit by the Palestinian president since last week’s devastating offensive by Israeli forces in the Jenin camp, established since 2005.
The 87-year-old President of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, is rarely seen outside his headquarters in contact with the public, and in this context, the visit of the President to the Jenin camp is considered remarkable.
Israel’s two-day military operation in the West Bank, the biggest in two decades, has killed at least 12 Palestinians and forced thousands to flee their homes.
After the Israeli military operation, much of the Jenin camp presents scenes of ruins.
An Israeli soldier was also killed in recent Israeli operations, after which the Israeli military said a crackdown on Palestinian militant groups was necessary.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Jenin on Wednesday afternoon by a Jordanian helicopter, where a large number of Palestinians arrived at the refugee camp by road with security measures in place.
The Palestinian president arrived in Jenin and laid flowers on the graves of Palestinians killed in last week’s operation before addressing Jim Ghafir.
It should be noted that the leadership of Mahmoud Abbas in the Palestinian Authority has been criticized for lack of security coordination, widespread corruption and lack of progress towards independence.
According to a June Palestinian opinion poll, only 17 percent of Palestinians are satisfied with the leadership of Mahmoud Abbas, and 80 percent want him to step down.

The Palestinian Authority has long resented its security cooperation with Israel, which allows its security forces to crack down on rival militant groups such as Hamas, but the raids in the Jenin camp have fueled tensions among Palestinians. His reputation has been further tarnished.
In response to Palestinian attacks targeting Israelis in the Palestinian Territories, the Israeli army has taken swift action.
More than 150 Palestinians have been killed in these operations by the Israeli army, while at least 26 people have been reported killed in Palestinian attacks against Israelis.
