Jordan’s Public Security Department (PSD) said on Sunday that “three suspects wanted for terrorism were killed in a shootout with police on Jordan’s southeastern border”.
According to Arab News, the statement said, “Two people killed by police firing on Saturday were prisoners who had recently escaped from a rehabilitation center.”
The third person killed was a member of the Al-Husseinyah cell and a most wanted person who was involved in the killing of Colonel Abdul Razzaq al-Dalabih on December 16 last year during violent protests against the increase in petrol prices in the southern region of Maan, Jordan.
Public Security Department spokesman Amir Al-Sartawi said that “police identified the hideout of the escaped prisoners in a remote area on the southeastern borders of Saudi Arabia and Jordan.”
The spokesman said that after being surrounded by trained security forces, the fugitive wanted persons opened fire on the police with automatic weapons. All three were killed in the retaliatory firing.
“The identity of the wanted persons has been revealed through DNA tests and family members,” the spokesman said.
He said that the investigation into the escape of the prisoners from the jail is going on.
It should be remembered that the Deputy Director of Police, Colonel Dr. Abdul Razzaq Al-Dalabikh, was killed by a bullet in the head during the riots against the increase in petrol prices in Maan, the southern province of the country. The authorities termed it as ‘riots’.
Later, the security force raided the residence of the suspect involved in the murder of Colonel Abdul Aziz Al-Dalabih, Deputy Director of Police of Maan.
During the operation, a suspect involved in the killing of police officer Colonel Al-Dalabih was killed while three security force personnel were killed.
The statement said that ‘five officials were injured while 8 people were arrested’.
