An alleged Hamas militant drove into a crowded bus stop in Tel Aviv on Tuesday and stabbed people there. Eight people were injured in the attack.

Palestinian militant groups hailed the attack as part of an ongoing Israeli military operation in the occupied West Bank.

According to Arab News, Israeli police chief Kobi Shabtai told reporters that “an armed citizen shot and killed the attacker”.

The attack took place when Israeli soldiers moved into the Jenin refugee camp in search of suspected Palestinian militants and weapons.

The number of Palestinians killed in the two-day Israeli operation has reached ten.

The Israeli operation that began in the West Bank on Monday is one of the most intense military operations in the West Bank in two decades.

More than 140 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank this year. At least 26 people have been killed in Palestinian attacks targeting Israelis.

The militant group Hamas described the Tel Aviv attacker as a ‘fighter’ and said that the attack was in retaliation for the Israeli military operation in Jenin.

It was not immediately known whether the attacker was sent by the group or acted on his own.

Another militant group, Islamic Jihad, which has a large presence in Jenin, has also credited the attack.

Israel’s internal security agency, Sun Bet, identified the attacker as a Palestinian from the West Bank. He had no prior security record.

The head of the Israeli police says that “several people connected to the attacker have been arrested”. However, its details were not disclosed.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health has said on Tuesday that ‘the number of dead has increased to ten in two days’.

The Israeli army claimed that ‘all the dead were militants but did not provide details’.

The Israeli army says that it has recovered weapons and explosives during the operation on Tuesday.

Israeli media reported that ‘the Israeli army has detained 120 alleged militants since Monday’.

The spokesman of the Israeli army said that about 50 attacks were carried out from the Jenin camp during the last one year. That is why action has been initiated’.

“The purpose of these operations is to crack down and thwart attacks against Palestinian militants.”
