Following the Los Angeles wildfires, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences extended the voting window for Oscar nominations.
Voting for nearly 10,000 Academy members opened on January 8th and was originally scheduled to close on January 12th. However, according to Variety, the deadline is now January 14th. Additionally, the announcement of nominations, which was originally scheduled to be announced on January 17, has been moved to January 19. Academy postpones nominations for Oscar 2025
The Academy sent out an email to members Wednesday afternoon detailing the date change from CEO Bill Cramer. “We want to express our deepest sympathies to those affected by the devastating fires in Southern California. Many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you,” the email said.
Other changes to the Oscars schedule
Additional schedule changes outlined in the email include: An international screening of a shortlist of feature films scheduled for Wednesday evening in Los Angeles has been rescheduled until later in the week.
The Los Angeles Sound Branch in-person competitions and makeup and hair artist competitions in Los Angeles and New York on January 11 have been cancelled. Conan O’Brien will host the 2025 Oscars on March 2.

Several large fires in Los Angeles County caused by strong winds have killed at least five people and left others with “serious injuries,” according to CNN. The Palisades Fire, burning in West Los Angeles near Malibu and Santa Monica, has already destroyed at least 1,000 structures. According to CalFire, it is the most destructive event to ever occur in Los Angeles County.
