Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, passed away tragically this week. Their family suspects carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause, TMZ learns.
The couple’s daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, shared that the cause of the death has not been confirmed, but that toxic smoke may be responsible.
Law enforcement did not find any indications of foul play, and Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed that deputies were not ruled out the possibility as an investigation is underway.
The couple was found dead and dead in a modern New Mexico home Wednesday after neighbors raised concerns. Built in 2000, the house is not associated with known gas leaks or service issues.
During the welfare check, Sheriff Mendoza explained that gas companies and fire department staff were dispatched to ensure officers were safe during the search.
Jean and Betsy have lived in their New Mexico home since their retirement in 2004. Elizabeth revealed that Gene’s favorite film is “French Connection.”
