The rumor sheds a thought-provoking light on the role of social media in our society (Photo: Netflix)

One day I received a WhatsApp message from a friend about Rowan Atkinson, the British actor who played Mr. Bean, who had passed away. I was very sad because it has been my favorite character since childhood. A similar message was received from two or three other people.
When I started forwarding this message to my other friends, I thought I should confirm it once. After checking the showbiz magazine of English newspapers, it was found that this news is false, but many people continued to receive that message for two or three months because a large number of people believe every news on the internet to be true.
‘Afwaah’ is a remarkable film of the present day which sheds light on the role of social media in our society in a thought provoking manner. The story of this film mirrors the harsh realities of today’s times and brilliantly portrays the alarming trend of rumors on social media.
By making this film, director Sudhir Mishra has taken a big step towards highlighting the issue that not all news seen on hand-held mobiles is true. He has tried to explain how people’s sympathies can be gathered by cleverly spreading ‘propaganda’ on social media and similarly how thousands of mortal enemies of a single person can be created by spreading hateful content within a moment. are
Nawazuddin Siddiqui (Rehab Ahmed) and Bhumi Padnekar (NV) have played the lead roles in the film, while Sumit Vyas (Vicky Bana) and Sharab Hashmi (Chandan Singh) have performed well in the supporting roles.
Nowadays almost every movie and season is being shot in Rajasthan. Most of the shooting of this film has also been done in Udaipur.
The story begins with a political rally organized by Viki Bana, in which a riot breaks out and some people are killed. Chandan Singh, an activist of the same party, whose video goes viral within moments, is blamed and goes into hiding.
Because of this, Vicky Bana gets into a fight with her fiance and Nee Vee and she leaves the house. When the goons of Vicky Bana’s party try to find and forcibly take Nee Vee back, Rehab Ahmed happens to pass by and tries to save Nee Vee.
This is the moment when the story takes a dangerous turn, the situation becomes so complicated that Rahab and Nevi have to run away together. Wiki Bana creates a ‘manipulation’ team on social media that gives a religious color to the issue.
Sudhir Mishra, the director of this film, has been heavily criticized on Indian social media for portraying Muslims as oppressed and Hindus as oppressors in this film. Some also believe that he has captured the perception of India’s deteriorating secularism with films like Kashmir Files and Kerala Story.
The big minds of Bollywood have worked behind the film, notable names being Hansal Mehta, Anubhav Sinha (producer), Ketan Mehta and Anurag Kashyap. All of them are thanked by a special note before the film starts. All these names are rarely associated with commercial Bollywood cinema as they are purely looking for a strong story and script.
The film’s message is very realistic about how a piece of misinformation on social media can quickly go viral and affect people’s lives and sow discord in society.
The film has a rating of 4.5 out of 10 on IMDB while Times of India gives it a rating of 5.3 out of 5. Films highlighting social issues have similar ratings because the trend of watching commercial films is more prevalent here.
In my opinion, the message of this film is so powerful and timely that its importance should not be judged by its rating. Whoever has a social media app in their mobile, this movie is for them, that is, this movie is for all of us.
