There was a time in Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan’s film career when the media not only ignored him completely but also did not like to photograph him.
According to the newspaper Indian Express, some time ago Amitabh Bachchan had said in a blog post that during the time of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the media had imposed a complete ban on his coverage.
When Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency in 1975, she also imposed restrictions on the press. According to Amitabh Bachchan, the film media believed that Amitabh Bachchan was also responsible for the restrictions imposed on the media, so the media completely boycotted his news, photos and interviews.
It was during the 1970s that Amitabh Bachchan started emerging as a hero and got star status, yet the media absolutely refused to air his pictures and interviews.
Amitabh Bachchan said that whenever he attended a function or a film premiere, photographers would put down their cameras in protest and sometimes his name was not even included in the film’s credits.
Amitabh Bachchan recounts an incident that when his superhit film ‘Deewar’ was released, the best actor trophy was given to Sanjeev Kumar for the film ‘Aandhi’.
Amitabh Bachchan was called on stage to present this trophy to his rival actor.
‘Many commentators and media outlets at the time said that this move was done to embarrass me.’
Amitabh Bachchan said that the media’s hostile attitude towards him continued for 15 years which ended only when he met with a fatal accident.
Amitabh Bachchan had a terrible accident during the shooting of the film ‘Quli’ that a famous magazine wrote a sympathetic column about the actor despite the ban, which surprised Amitabh.
When Amitabh recovered, he went to meet the editor of the magazine and told him that the media wanted him to fail but not his death.
