The film ‘Benil and Adama’, produced by Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Fund, has won two awards at the ongoing International Film Festival in the southwestern coastal city of Biarritz, France.
According to Arab News, Senegalese filmmaker Ramata Toule Sai made history earlier this year when he made his debut at the Cannes Film Festival for the Palme d’Or, the top prize.
Benel and Adama is a 2023 French-Malian-Senegalese romantic drama film directed by Senegalese screenwriter Ramata Tole Sai in his feature film debut.
The film premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on 20 May 2023.
The film depicts the region in which Ramata Tole Sai’s parents were born, in a remote village in northern Senegal.
Banil & Adama is the story of a young couple whose romance is in jeopardy. The village panchayat has expressed their disapproval of the couple, causing chaos in the entire village.
The story of the film is a tragic tale, ‘Benil and Adama’ first feels like an ancient love story (but) gradually we realize that this love story is more focused on Benel than Adama and it is a woman’s story. She turns into me trying to prove herself.
