The filmmaker remembered his late colleague and his recovery from addiction. He said that Mathew has performed well since the past few years and the entire team is proud of him. James also said the team has been devastated since news of his death broke. Jennifer Anniston has revealed that Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow are ‘devastated’ as they mourn the loss of their former co-star and friend. The producer stated that the entire team was like a family for Mathew, standing by him and helping him through his difficult times.

“We were so proud of him over the last few years, making this remarkable recovery,” James said in an interaction with the Today portal. He added: “He was part of a family and he was the first person who was no longer part of that family. I texted the girls (Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow) the day we found out and they were destroyed. The death of a brother.” He praised the casting of Matthew, with Chandler Bing calling it a “perfect mix.” He noted that even though Matthew “doesn’t talk” when he’s on camera, he’s always present in the moment.
