Gadar and Gadar 2 director Anil Sharma has once again clarified that Govinda was never offered the role of Sunny Deol’s Tara Singh.
While Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel and Anila Sharma are basking in the success of Gadar 2, rumors suggest that Govinda was initially approached for the role of Tara Singh, while Kajol was considered for the role of Sakina in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. Now, Anil Sharma, director of both Gadar and Gadar 2, has cleared the air by saying that Govinda was never offered Gadar. During a recent interaction with Bollywood Thikana, the filmmaker said that Sunny Deol should always be Tara Singh.
Explaining the whole misunderstanding, Anil Sharma was quoted as saying, “Bechare, unko nahi yaad raha hoga (The poor guy must have forgotten). I was working on something with him and I told him that I had a story for Sunny Deol. He asked me what it was, and I said “I told him. He said it was a good thing I went to Sunny because he could never have made that movie.”
The producer also revealed that while narrating Gadar’s script to Govinda, he assumed that the director wanted him to produce the film. Anil Sharma added that he signed Sunny Deol for Gadar before meeting Govinda.
The director added: “Bade aadmi they, itni filmein karte they uss waqt, yeh choti si baat thi, dimaag se nikal gayi (He was a big star then, he was very busy, this little incident must have gone out of his mind).”
Anil Sharma shared that a similar incident happened with Salman Khan and Gadar 2, the Kick actor showed interest after hearing the story, and Sunny Deol had already agreed for this role.
All About Gadar 2
Gadar 2, which released on August 11 this year, managed to mint more than Rs 500 million at the domestic box office. The project, in which Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma reprise their roles as Tara Singh, Sakeena and Jeete respectively, also saw Gaurav Chopra, Manish Wadhwa, Manoj Bakshi, Aarya Sharma, Simrat Kaur and Luv Sinha playing important characters.
Gadar 2 tells the story of Tara Singh (Sunny Deol) returning to Pakistan to save her son before the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War.
