Operation Sindoor: India Pakistan War 2025 – Full Story

It was around 1 AM on May 7, 2025 when India launched one of its biggest military operations in decades. Missiles and aircraft crossed the border into Pakistan. Nine locations were hit. The world woke up to news that India and Pakistan were at war again.

This is the story of Operation Sindoor, what started it, what happened during those four days, and where things stand now one year later.

What Started It All

About two weeks before Operation Sindoor, on April 22, 2025, a group of five terrorists attacked tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. They killed 26 people, most of them Hindu tourists who had come to visit one of the most beautiful valleys in India.

The attack was brutal and it caused massive outrage across India. The Indian government said the attack was planned by Pakistan-based terror groups, specifically Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. Pakistan denied any involvement.

India gave Pakistan time to respond. Pakistan did not take any action. So India decided to act on its own.

What India Did on May 7

At 1:05 AM, Indian forces began striking targets inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation lasted about 25 minutes.

India said it hit nine terror camps including the headquarters of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. Indian officials said over 100 terrorists were killed and that civilian areas were not touched.

The Indian government named the operation “Sindoor” after the red powder that married Hindu women wear. Many women lost their husbands in the Pahalgam attack, so the name carried a strong emotional meaning.

Pakistan called the strikes an act of war.

Four Days of Fighting

Pakistan did not stay quiet. The next day it fired back, targeting Indian military bases with missiles and drones. India responded. Then Pakistan responded again.

For four days, May 7 to May 10, both countries fired at each other’s airbases. Fighter jets from both sides were involved. Pakistan used Chinese-made weapons including J-10C jets and PL-15 missiles, which many defense experts were watching closely since it was their first real war test.

Exactly how many aircraft were shot down and how many casualties occurred on each side is still disputed. Both governments give different numbers and neither has been fully verified.

What is clear is that it was the worst military confrontation between the two countries in almost 30 years.

How It Ended

On May 10, 2025, US President Donald Trump posted on his Truth Social account saying that India and Pakistan had agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire after a “long night of talks.”

US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio had spent two days talking to officials from both countries. Trump called it a US-mediated agreement. India’s government pushed back and said the ceasefire was worked out directly between the two countries. Pakistan later nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role.

Both sides confirmed the ceasefire but within hours explosions were heard again in Kashmir. Each side accused the other of breaking the agreement first. Still, the fighting stopped and has not resumed since.

One Year Later in 2026

In Pakistan, May 2026 was marked with celebrations. Pakistani cities had banners and posters honoring the military. The Pakistan Air Force held a ceremony in Rawalpindi. The government officially called May 7 the “Day of the Battle of Truth” and organized a concert in Lahore.

In India, the anniversary was more serious. The Indian Army released a video on May 7, 2026 highlighting the operation. Prime Minister Modi said India would continue to “identify, track, and eliminate terrorists and their backers.”

Both countries are saying they won. Both are also spending heavily on new weapons since the war.

Pakistan tested two new missiles in 2026. India tested a ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine. Both sides are building up.

At the border, India’s home minister ordered buildings within 15 kilometers of the Pakistan border to be demolished, saying it was to stop cross-border crime. Diplomatic relations are still frozen. There are no trade links and no direct flights between the two countries.

Why the World Was Watching

India and Pakistan both have nuclear weapons. That is why this four-day war got so much global attention.

It was the first time in modern history that two nuclear-armed countries had a real aerial battle. Experts around the world are studying what happened because it has lessons for future conflicts, especially regarding Chinese weapons systems and whether limited wars can stay limited when both sides have nuclear weapons.

The US, China, and other major powers all got involved in trying to stop the fighting, which shows how serious the situation was.

Key Dates

Final Thoughts

Operation Sindoor changed how the region thinks about war and terrorism. India showed it was willing to cross the border and strike. Pakistan showed it would fight back. The US showed it was still the one phone call that could stop a war.

One year later the guns are quiet but nothing has been resolved. Kashmir is still disputed. The terror groups are still there. The armies on both sides are bigger and better armed than before.

People in both countries are hoping May 2025 was a one-time event. But analysts are not so sure.
