Hollywood spokesman Tim Menke revealed he was fired from a Paramount photo after booking Tom Cruise’s infamous 2005 Oprah Winfrey Show interview.

Speaking at ICG’s Public Relations Award, Menke told the audience after receiving the Henri Bollinger Award: The crowd responded with a laugh, shocking the reaction.

At the time, the cruise was promoted. World Warhowever, his interview became one of the most talked about moments in television history. His over-zealous enthusiasm surprised both Oprah and the audience, leading to intense media coverage.

The impact of the virus in the interview was so important that it was reportedly led to Menke’s firing. He later rebuilt his career at 20th Century Fox before returning to Paramount a few years later.

Looking back at the incident, Oprah Winfrey previously said, “I thought it was an expression of fun and lively life and love. The media’s response was really unfair.”

Twenty years later, the couch jumping moment remains a clear pop culture event, and Menke’s firing is now part of that legacy.
