Alexander Volkanovski outlined his retirement plans as he prepares to compete for the vacant featherweight title at UFC 314.
Volkanovski (26-4 MMA, 13-3 UFC) will face Diego Lopez (26-6 MMA, 5-1 UFC) at Miami’s Kaseya Center on April 12th at Miami’s Kaseya Center.
After suffering consecutive knockout losses to lighter champions Islam Makachev and Topuria at UFC 298, Volkanovski considered retiring, but now aims to make the most of his final stretch in the sport.
“I think I have a little more, a little more,” Volkanovski said. Ariel Hell Wani Show. “I understand. I say it, then fight, and absolutely love it: “Give me seven more!” But how long? I still love it, but how long do I want to do this on myself and my body? …I want to have one final crack, get that belt, defend it, maybe defend it again, or have one big fight after defense. Then maybe I’m finished. ”
Volkanovski is focused on regaining his featherweight title before leaving. He acknowledged Movsar Evloev’s claims about the title shot, but was not surprised that Lopes would get the opportunity.
“I’m getting a belt so I’ll call him,” Volkanovski said of Evloev. “He could probably just wait if he wanted. I’ll talk to the UFC. I’ll let them know, I’ll win that title and fight him in three months. Tell me the date, and we can do it.”
UFC 314 marks Volkanovsky’s attempt to regain the featherweight championship.
